What The Estes Park Aerial Tramway Experience Is REALLY Like

|

They say the views from the Estes Park Aerial Tramway are breathtaking, but is this classic Colorado ride worth the hype and the ticket price? We’re heading up Prospect Mountain to find out. We’ll explore the historic Estes Tram, visit the newly reopened summit, and see if the views live up to the hype. Let’s see what it’s REALLY like.

Getting There & The Bottom Line

Before we soar, let’s talk logistics. The tramway has its own small parking lot with 57 spaces, but it fills up fast.

An adult ticket is about forty dollars, with discounts for seniors and the military.

My biggest tip: book your tickets online for a specific time slot, noting that this iconic tramway shuts down for the Winter. The new ownership has implemented this new online ticketing system, saving you from hours-long wait times.

The Ascent & A Feat of Engineering

The ride up is surprisingly quick and a very smooth ride—about 5 minutes.

World-renowned tramway engineer Robert Heron designed the Tram as an open aerial lift system without support towers.  What’s most unique is the “free-span” design, meaning there are no support towers between the bottom and the top.

The Summit – Those 360-Degree Views

Stepping out on the observation deck at the top of Prospect Mountain, at over 8,700 feet… wow. “360-degree views” isn’t just a slogan; it’s the real deal. You get completely uninterrupted vistas of the Estes Valley and the jagged peaks of the Continental Divide, including Longs Peak. For photographers, it’s an absolute paradise. On the question of the view? It absolutely, 100% lives up to the hype.

The summit isn’t just about the view, especially since reopening in 2024 under new management. They made substantial improvements to the infrastructure and the Estes Park Tramway experience! They’ve added the Hungry Chipmunk Cafe and a Gift Shop, where you can now grab a beer or wine to enjoy on the deck. There is also a coffee shop and food if that’s more to your liking.

There is also an easy, family-friendly trail that loops around the summit, which is a huge plus. And of course, the famously friendly chipmunks are everywhere, adding a fun, interactive element to the experience.

The Final Verdict – Is It Worth The Hype?

So, is it worth it? At around $40 for an adult ticket, it’s not cheap. But you get a unique ride on a piece of American history, instant access to a mountain summit without a strenuous hike, and genuinely breathtaking views from the mountain’s summit. The new additions, like the trails and cafe, add serious value, turning it from a quick photo op into a longer experience.
