Cross Mountain, known initially as “Kreuzberg” by early Fredericksburg pioneers, was used as a lookout point by Native Americans before early settlers discovered a timber cross on this hilltop in 1847.  Cross Mountain is nestled on a historic marl and limestone hill with an elevation of 1,951 feet.

At its summit stands a large, illuminated cross, a beacon visible for miles around, especially beautiful as it glows against the twilight sky.

This is a pleasant detour as you head to or from Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. The loop trail leading to the top of the mountain takes 10-15 minutes to climb. It’s worth it as you get a great view of Fredericksburg and the Texas Hill Country.

In 1952, the Gillespie County Historical Society bought the 14-acre site to preserve its peaceful environment as a historical landmark.

Park Information

Cross Mountain Park is open from dawn to dusk, and admission is free. Parking may be limited during busy times.

Location  

To drive to Cross Mountain, turn North off Main Street onto N Milam St. From there, it’s just a 5-minute, 2-mile drive from downtown Fredericksburg.

Trail Going Up and Down

Walking up and down the short trail is considered an easy to moderate walk.  As you see, it is a good, wide path, and the incline facilitates a reasonably easy climb.
