Historical Significance and Background

Founding and Early Years

Established in the late 19th century, the Royal Gorge Railroad has roots as deep as its canyons. Throughout its history, the Royal Gorge Railroad has played a pivotal role in the development of the surrounding area. It not only facilitated commerce but also opened the floodgates for tourism, making the Royal Gorge Region a popular destination for both outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs. Think of it as the ultimate VIP pass to nature’s most illustrious artwork.

The Colorado Railroad War

The Colorado Railroad War, also known as the Royal Gorge Railroad War, took place in the late 1870s between two train companies: the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway and the smaller Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. But the following year, a silver discovery in Leadville reignited the competition.

Now, both companies were racing to lay tracks through the narrow Royal Gorge. The Denver and Rio Grande also hired gunfighters, so the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe decided to bring in more help. On March 20, 1879, they hired Bat Masterson to assemble a team of tough fighters, including famous names such as Doc Holliday and Ben Thompson, along with approximately seventy others. They had experienced considerable success until June 10, when a court ruled in favor of the Denver and Rio Grande, altering the situation. With help from local sheriffs, the Denver and Rio Grande launched an attack on their rivals. There was intense fighting at the Santa Fe’s bases in Colorado, and they quickly lost their garrisons in Denver and Colorado Springs. Masterson’s team in Pueblo held out the longest, but eventually, they had to admit defeat.
